The term “Magic Realism” describes Gonsalves work accurately. His work is an attempt to represent human beings’ desire to believe the impossible, to be open to possibility. Gonsalves injects a sense of magic into realistic scenes. Although Gonsalves’ work is often categorized as surrealistic, it differs because the images are deliberately planned and result from conscious thought, using carefully planned illusionist devices.

Rob Gonsalves grew up drawing images from his imagination, but the Surrealist movement, in particular the works of Remedios Varo and Rene Magritte, also influenced his work. After he graduated from college, Mr.Gonsalves worked as an architect, and as a painter of trompe l’oeil murals and theater sets. After receiving an enthusiastic response at the 1990 Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition, he began painting full time, and his work continues to be highly sought after. Numerous individuals around the world, including a United States Senator, as well as corporations and embassies collect Gonsalves’ original work and limited edition prints.

His first picture book was IMAGINE A NIGHT released in June 2003 by Simon & Schuster.
IMAGINE A NIGHT has 16 pictures in it : Cold Comfort, Bedtime Aviation, Ladies of the Lake, Astral Projections, House by the Railroad, Listening Fields, A Change of Scenery, Medieval Moonlight, New Moon Eclipsed, Woods Within, White Blanket, and five others.

Due to the success of IMAGINE A NIGHT , Simon & Schuster released a second book, IMAGINE A DAY in 2004 for which he won the 2005 Governor General’s Award in the Children’s Literature – Illustration category. IMAGINE A DAY has 17 pictures in it: Sun Sets Sails, On the Upswing, Table Top Towers, Written Worlds, Tributaries, Still Waters, Castles on the Cliff, Tree House in Autumn, Wilderness Gothic, Flight Plan, Unfinished Puzzle, Acrobatic Engineering, and five others.

“Limelight”

Rather than creating representational paintings on a flat canvas, Alexa Meade creates her representational paintings directly on top of the physical subjects that she is referencing. When photographed, the representational painting and the subject being referenced appear to be one and the same as the 3D space of her painted scenes becomes optically compressed into a 2D plane.

“Curated”

Meade said “I paint representational portraits directly on top of the people I am representing. The models are transformed into embodiments of the artist’s interpretation of their essence. When captured on film, the living, breathing people underneath the paint disappear, overshadowed by the masks of themselves.”
